The Morning After
Nicholas Pendrake was used to many things. Enclosed spaces didn’t bother him, nor did he object to wearing the odd straight jacket. But as he sat up in his sleeping bag and rubbed his back, he found himself thinking that none of it had prepared him for camping out in the great outdoors. “How do you manage it, Alex?”
“I’ve gotten used to roughing it.” Already at work on making them some breakfast, Alex was up and awake and dressed, glad for the canopy of trees and for the shorter distance between them and their destination. “Thankfully, that includes getting food prepped and ready with little trouble. Now you get cleaned up and dressed, breakfast will be ready in a little bit.”
Not about to argue, Nicholas worked his way out of his sleeping bag and thought to himself that the sooner they reached Ecruteak and could sleep in the Pokémon Center, the better.
-
“Vaughn, you got any clue what’s up with the boss? Megelle, I mean, not…”
“I know to whom you’re referring, Brawn.” Vaughn shook his head as he continued typing into the computer before him. “I really have no idea, and I’m in no rush to find out. Personally, I don’t see why he has such an interest in dealing with this particular trainer, but orders are orders.”
“Yeah, but how we supposed to find her anyway? She could be anywhere.”
The characteristic smirk returned as information came onto the screen. “Social networking is our friend.” As TrainerWatch yielded its results, he chuckled softly. “Alexandria Masters, age 17. A shame; she’s a genuine woman and she’s too young to have fun with. Rather impressive set of Pokémon too; I’m sure the boss will appreciate having them.”
Looking over Alex’s roster, Brawn grinned and laughed. “Yeah. And the Boss’ll love it too.” He quickly amended, “I was talking about…”
“I know. And we’ll have them soon enough.”
-
#I’m glad that the two of you are traveling together again, Alexandria. Nicholas has missed you, the poor dear. Thought about you every night.#
Somewhat embarrassed, Nicholas turned to the Gardevoir seated beside them at the folding table and gently admonished, “Igraine, please… she doesn’t need to know that much.”
Alex grinned before scooping up some oatmeal with her spoon. “It’s okay Nick. I thought about you too. As long as your thoughts about me were close to my thoughts about you, I don’t mind.”
“<Somehow, I have a hard time imagining that they were anything but close.>” A glare from both his trainer and the Gardevoir, and Surtur quickly retorted, “<What? He’s only human.>”
Alex rolled her eyes at the Blaziken’s remark, before a nudge at her side caught her attention. She looked down at the table to find Pteryx gently nudging her arm and looking up at her expectantly. “Ark-ark! Ken ar!”
“You’ve had your breakfast?” At the Archen’s nod, she reached into her bag and pulled out a baggie, extracting a Cheri Berry from it. “Okay, but just one. I don’t want you getting a stomach ache.”
Pteryx squealed with joy and happily gobbled up the berry, prompting Nicholas to note, “Glad you’ve added to the roster a little.”
“Yeah, and I’m not surprised you haven’t.” She looked to her boyfriend and added, “Of course, you’ve always had different priorities from me.”
Indeed, in comparison to Alex’s roster of battle-trained and balanced Pokémon, Nicholas’ was far less varied. While four were fully evolved, Lancelot and Igraine included, two of the remaining four hadn’t reached their final evolution yet, helped by the fact that both needed an evolutionary item to do so, Mordred lacking a Razor Claw and Morgana a Dark Stone. The Sneasel and Misdreavus, however, didn’t look inclined to complain about their status.
“Yeah, to be honest, I’d be fine with not battling again, not unless I had to.” A smile crossed his lips as he admitted, “Not that it wasn’t fun, but…”
“But you’re fine being a performer and not a battler. No complaints from me.” As she continued with her breakfast, Alex noted, “To be honest, as much as I don’t mind getting a battle in, I don’t want to start one right away. At least, not until I finish my breakfast.” She smiled and added, “Everything’s easier on a full stomach.”
A small laugh, and Nicholas noted, “Well, maybe for you. I admit, it helps most of the time, but…”
“Hey!” The two turned to find a young trainer wearing light clothing and dark-colored shorts charging towards them. “You two are Pokémon trainers, right?”
“Me more than him, yeah.” Alex already knew where this was going, but politely asked, “Why do you ask?”
The kid grinned and pulled out a Poké Ball. “You up for a battle?!”
Alex grinned right back. “Sure. Just let me finish my breakfast.”
“Sweet!”
TBC!
