Things to Come
“Oh, thith ith tho awethome. I know I keep on thaying that, but that doethn’t make it any leth true.” Amelia beamed as she looked from the open badge case to its owner. “Tho, what next? Are you gonna go back to Johto or what?”
“Soon enough, yeah.” Alex closed her badge case and pocketed it. “Right now, though, I want to squeeze in some last minute training with Grospoliner and Strika before I settle some old business.” At the shorter girl’s confusion, she explained, “I made an arrangement with Isabelle. I regretted it almost instantly, but still.”
“Alex and Isabelle made a wager.” Amelia turned to Cass as she elaborated, “They’re going to have a full six-on-six match. If Alex loses, then she has to give up on traveling and stick around here. If she wins, she gets petty payback.”
“Like I said, I regretted it almost instantly.”
Amelia laughed. “Thith ithn’t a big deal! If Alex battleth with Raijin…”
“Nuh-uh, no go.” At the fan girl’s curious look, Alex elaborated, “Raijin’s one of three Pokémon I have whose strength and power are significantly stronger than the rest of my roster. They’ll follow me, but using them is an unfair advantage, and the only reason I had Raijin on the team was as a backup in case Nadyra fell against Juan. If I’m gonna battle Isabelle, it’s gonna be with my main six, for the sake of fair play if not for the sake of pride.” A confident smile, and she added, “Besides, from what I’ve learned about her roster, there’s no way she’ll have an easy time of it with me. She might win, but it won’t be an easy victory.”
“Awethome!” Amelia grinned enthusiastically. “But you don’t need to rush off to get that taken care of, right? I mean, you can thtill do thtuff here in Thootopolith?” She turned to Cass. “I mean, there’th plenty of time for you to get thome advice from Wallace about Contethtth and…”
“The thought occurred to me, but no.” Cass smiled sadly. “I made up my mind, and I need to stick to it and forget about participating in contests, or I’ll drive myself crazy.”
“But you were tho excited about them…” The energetic young girl’s expression became one of sorrow. “Thith ithn’t becauthe of Edward, ith it?”
“No, I made my choice before he turned out to be an evil little sociopath.” Cass shook her head. “I trained hard and my Pokémon did great, textbook perfect. The trouble is, I wasn’t the only one, and my textbook was grade school compared to their college texts.” The smile became more joyous as she noted, “Still, I had fun. I figure that’s what matters.”
Alex gently nudged her sister, a proud smile on her face. “Yeah, that it does.” She then opted to change topics. “So, I think that leaves us with two questions. Question one, do we take the long way back home or the short way?”
“Flight versus ferry when every second counts?” The redhead laughed. “That’s obvious. Flight.”
“Then question two.” Alex turned to Amelia and asked, “You want to be there when the battle goes down?”
The fan girl’s answer was quick and predictable. “Oh, you better believe it!”

“So Flatsters got her eighth badge?” Isabelle laughed. “What a fluke. Who’d she win it from anyway, some idiot in an out of the way Gym?”
“She beat Juan and Wallace in a double battle at the Sootopolis Gym.”
A raised eyebrow. “Wallace the Hoenn League Champion? Wallace the handsome man with the cape and hat? Wallace with the Milotic?” The blonde laughed again. “He must be losing his touch.”
Melanie looked at her old classmate and friend with disbelief, surprised that she wasn’t taking the upcoming battle seriously. Granted, she’d never thought highly of Alex, but the facts spoke for themselves; she’d clearly made up for lost time. “Isabelle, don’t you think you should take this a little more seriously? I mean…”
“Melanie, I beat Flatsters fair and square the last time we battled, and the first time didn’t even count. I’ve seen her with her simple moves, and she isn’t worth worrying about.” Isabelle grinned. “Give me a couple weeks time, and I’ll put her down like the pathetic little rabid dog that she is.”
Melanie almost noted that rabid dogs tended to be dangerous, but she opted against it, thinking the remark would fall on deaf ears. One way or another, the battle would come, and one of the two old rivals would walk away the victor.
TBC!
