PW! was spawned off of OW!, which was a thing going on in alt.fan.sailormoon back in the days when Usenet was big and newsgroups were a thing to go look at. Back in late 1999, me and a buddy got the idea to basically shanghai the concept and apply it to Pokemon. On the 1st of January, 2000, we posted the first PW! stories to alt.games.nintendo.pokemon.
After that, we just rolled with the punches. People joined, it got pretty big, and I believe PW!'s lifespan was longer than OW!'s was. But don't hold me to that.
So here we are, 2011 and with Black and White to be released in a few days. For a few years now, I've wanted to breathe some new life into the Wars. But Usenet fell out of favor at some point, and I'm about the last person you want making a website, so I wasn't sure what to do. The obvious idea was a message board, but I was a bit wary. After all, the way usenet posts work kinda allows for long threads that can jump in and out of continuity.
I wasn't sure that would translate to a message board.
I'm still not, if I'm going to be perfectly honest with everyone. I'm still not sure this is the way to do it, but outside of Usenet, I don't know if the concept can work anyway. I'd like it to. People had a lot of fun writing their interactive stories, and it'd be nice if, with the advent of wifi battling and trading, we could have a fresh start.
I guess time will tell, in the long run, whether this was a mistake or not. It could spiral out of control, we could get spammed to the dark ages, or people just might not show up. I'm not sure what's going to happen. But then, I wasn't sure what would happen over a decade ago when I made that first post to AGNP, either.
